Orchard Gate wildflower area is a publicly accessible part of the estate designated as a wildflower area of approximately 20m x 10m. It has been fallow and recently some residents have started to plant it by taking up grass to make planting areas. It is just beginning as a wildflower project but with support from adults and kids will soon be ablaze with colour. The aim is to mix wildflowers with some fruit and herbs and reduce the grass area to access paths.
We used a Boston seeds loamy alluvial mix, and typical examples of species which have been identified are: Borage, daisies, dandelions, salvia, oregano, yarrow, wild marjoram, meadow buttercup, pink campion, catmint, sorrel, geraniums, calendula, toadflax
We plan to use the success of the area to re nature other parts of the estate and develop the estate as a wildflower sanctuary, and encourage local children to participate. We are willing to share seed collecting sessions.
